OpenConnect, Shadowsocks or OpenVPN: which protocol should you use?

Each protocol has a job. Here is how to pick the right one for everyday use, for networks that block VPNs, and for routers.

PeachVPN gives you three ways to connect. You do not need to know how they work, only when to use each one.

OpenConnect: start here

OpenConnect is the default in every PeachVPN app. It is fast, stable and works on most networks. If the app connects and websites load, you are done.

Shadowsocks: when a network blocks VPNs

Some networks, such as some offices, hotels and countries, block or slow down VPN connections. Shadowsocks looks like ordinary web traffic, so it often gets through when OpenConnect does not.

Switch to Shadowsocks when:

  • the app connects but no websites load,
  • the connection drops every few minutes, or
  • OpenConnect does not connect at all.

OpenVPN: for routers

OpenVPN is for routers with a built-in OpenVPN client, so a whole home network, or devices without a PeachVPN app such as a games console, can use the VPN. It is in beta. See OpenVPN on your router.

Still not connecting?
